Piano Recital: Friday Morning Musicale

MFS_0401
I love going to my children’s Piano Recitals that have occurred a few times a year for the last several years at Tampa’s old Friday Morning Musicale on Horatio St in Tampa. This old theatre was built in 1927 and is open for rental for theater/ musical productions and other events. http://fridaymorningmusicale.com/
I have shot some cool events here. This is Taylor, a very talented and dedicated young lady who put on a really great performance in March. Here is a link to other shots from the same recital: http://www.michaelsheehanphotos.com/PianoRecital3213FriMM

Hugo’s and Victoria’s Prom

MFS_6103

MFS_6104-Edit
I made some images at the request of my son Hugo and his beautiful and talented girlfriend Victoria, for their Prom night Saturday last. I some shot quickly at our front door,  and one at the Tampa Art Museum, reflecting the minarets of the Old Tampa Bay Hotel. It is always a great pleasure to capture significant moments in our families lives. What a beautiful and loving pair!

VolleyBall

I just returned from a volleyball tournament in Daytona, Florida, where I got to shoot my daughter’s under 16 team in action. Getting good volleyball shots at these tournaments is a photographic challenge for a number of reasons including the low light levels inside the auditorium where the indoor games are played, the mixed color of the mercury lights and the reflections from the blue floor, the speed of play and the inability to use flash during normal games all conspire to make it

difficult to capture the decisive moment. Nonetheless there are plenty of opportunities to capture nice portraits of these beautiful girls, enjoying their games and demonstrating their skills, attention, teamwork, jubilation and even silliness.

I ventured out this evening with my daughter Genevieve, her 5 week old son Liam, and Cali her dog, to visit Alamo Square, home of the famous “Painted Ladies”. Unfortunately we missed the bright sunlight on these 6 famous houses and had to be content with a bracketed set of photos of these buildings to the East, with the Transamerica tower and downtown SF skyline only lit by the setting sun. You may recognize the “Ladies” as being the houses in the opening credits of “Full House”. While waiting for the sky to turn deep blue and the city lights to illuminate, I turned around to look up the hill, only to see a fantastic post sunset sky in the west. Genevieve kindly walked 50 yards to the top of the hill with dog and child, and I got some nice silhouettes with my 70-200 mm 2.8 lens.

When the yellows had disappeared from the sky I turned around again and took a couple more cityscapes as the sky blue deepened and the lights finally came out.

Life in the city

I was invited to shoot some promotional shots for an upcoming Mr International event at the University of South Florida. With a few of my Strobist buddies we headed to downtown Tampa to shoot our models in the city lights around Curtis Hixon Park and the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Riverwalk, with the University of Tampa Minarets (from the old Tampa Bay Hotel, an 1891 Gilded Age resort) in the background. Thanks are due to the excellent models of the Faces troupe, and De”mon Heller for a fun evening by the river.

Medieval comes to downtown Tampa

Thanks to Scott Melanson who suited up and sweated through the Florida heat to help me get these images. I used the opportunity (as I felt that the Florida ambiance with palm trees was not quite appropriate) to drop him into some scenes that I had previously shot in Ireland that were suitable to his medieval attire. One was shot in Bunratty castle the other at Doonagore near the Cliffs of Moher. If you are going to Ireland, here is a map I recently put together with some of the best places to photograph or visit.
Enjoy!

Stephen & Maureen

Stephen and Maureen are talented models attending the University of South Florida. I took these Photos last week in downtown Tampa at their request. It was great to have a few hours to wander around an old historic building with them and explore the opportunities there.

Happy Birthday America!

“Independence” on American Victory, a Liberty ship.

I took this photo some time back on board SS American Victory, a Liberty Ship docked at Channelside in Tampa Bay. Crystal Gomez is the elegant model in the US Flag dress. One 28″ lightbox to the upper right. Basic processing in Lightroom4 then stylised in OnOne Software’s Perfect PhotoSuite to accentuate the Blue, White and Red colors in celebration of today, July 4th, American Independence day.

Faces Modelling Troupe USF, Downtown Tampa

Had the great pleasure of shooting these 8 very talented young people last weekend with the Tampa downtown skyline behind. Of course had to use my trusty tripod and slow shutter to capture the background, and squatting down so low caused some aching in my legs the following day. All in a good cause.
Thanks to Stephen Sewar who helped organize the shoot, De’mone Heller who proposed me, Muhammad Tray Shakir, Cameron Walden who jumped high, Ameia Jackson, Telicia Davis, Jessica Davis-Hall who worked extra hard for her photos, and Kaena Wood. Also Min Insixingmy who kept them amused by shooting on his white seamless background.
Looking forward to shooting with them again.
