Another cool image from Megacon 2014 in Orlando recently. Lavi (with eyepatch) and Krori (with white forelock) are exorcists from D.Gray-Man series.
I had the great pleasure in attending a reading by Micheal O’Siadhail, one of Ireland’s greatest living poets in USF last week. A man of great linguistic virtuosity, he has spent his years living fully, listening, thinking and feeling deeply and perfecting his literary craft. He has published more than 15 books of critically acclaimed poetry along with lyrics and other literature. Just having completed a 6 week reading tour of the United States, he is returning to Ireland but travels extensively, reading, studying and examining the human condition in his personal search for meaning.
For further information on this remarkable man, his poetry and travels check his website http://osiadhail.com/ or pick up a copy of his remarkable Collected works at http://goo.gl/6FXJy9
It was a really memorable evening. He agreed to pose for me and I was honored to have the opportunity to make these portraits.
D600, ISO 200, 70mm 1/200 at f4. Main gridded softbox left, gridded hairlight right rear.
I posted this image of Zatanna from my Megacon 2014 Orlando shoot. It was well received but begged some questions I am happy to answer here.
It was a happy accident. When I arrived at the convention center, other photographers were complaining about the harsh light in the south-facing concours. I had set up initially with one flash in a saberstrip to compensate and provide the main light and provide a dark background rather than the grey it naturally is in ambient light. I shot a few shots with this model but the flash on one occasion didn’t fire as I had fired a couple of shots too quickly. Later when I reviewed the images in Lightroom, this image was grossly underexposed and I nearly deleted it. Instead I pressed autotone in Lightroom, and because I had shot in raw at a low ISO, there was enough ambient light to resuscitate the image. It was apparent that the large window light the model was facing was more than adequate to produce a flat lighting that suited her look.
Post processing to Original straight out of camera added 2.5 stops of light in LR. I just did basic simple edits with adjustment brush to tidy her face and hair but no other major adjustments, added sharpening (49),a little denoise (44) then Vignette -62, to finish.
Specs:1/160, f7.1 iso400, D600, no flash fired (actually SB600 failed briefly)
Pano of lighting after the convention completed showing position of photographed Grey background behind the blue figure. characters were placed about15 feet away from back wall. I cloned out the two thin lines on the background in each photo.
What an awesome crowd! 81,000 in the Orlando Convention Center on Saturday. This is my third time at Megacon, as I love to make images with the cosplayers and other characters at these events. The folk are so friendly and obliging, and have spent a lot of time and effort on their costumes, makeup, and their acts. Thank you to each person who agreed to stand on my X, under my really cool Saberstrip Flash/strobes and have their image taken.
Last years images are to be found at www.MichaelSheehanPhotos.com/Megacon2013, and I have started to fill www.MichaelSheehanPhotos.com/Megacon2014 with images from this years event.

Brigitte Sossou Perenyi was my gracious model at the “600 Block” (of Central Avenue in St Petersburg) murals that I had seen previously and had wanted to shoot for quite some time. I had been compiling a list of places to shoot in the Tampa Bay area and had to try this spot out. It is popular with other photographers because of the riot of color available there. You can check out my google map of places I think are interesting here: http://goo.gl/5hw2gH I would be happy to add to this map for photographers if you choose to send me places you have found interesting photographically in the Tampa Bay area.
A special shout out to my Stylist Brigitte herself, our Make up artist Courtney Taylor, and also Scott Krebs for directions and suggestions for this shoot. I had fun with my two SaberStrips providing additional portable lighting. Met up with Rossie Newson a St Pete photographer with great talent http://photosbyrossie.com/.who was interested in my lighting set up. Never know what adventures befall you, and the wonderful folk you encounter on the photographic trail. Comments are welcome……
Kenji Suganuma has been our music teacher for 20 years on and off with our four children.
He was trained by Mr Suzuki in Japan and has been running his own piano school since. He can be found at www.AcademyOfMusicalArts.com I would highly recommend him as a teacher as he has instilled a great love of music (and even for practice) in my children through his calm structured style. We have also enjoyed our visits to Friday Morning Musicale for his Saturday morning recitals and lunch by the parents.
Here is another group of his students. These photos were all taken from the same seat in the theater, during the performance, except for the last, which was taken on stage when this lovely lady was playing around afterwards. All were taken handheld with available light (theatre lights and natural window light).Nikon D600 70-200mm2.8 at 3.5 and ISO1600. More Photos from the recital are at http://www.michaelsheehanphotos.com/HalloweenRecital131026
Thanks to all the parents for their assistance with practice, costumes and their great food!
My neighbor Tara needed photos of her new 3 month old daughter, so I visited with my trusty 70-200mm and took some photos inside of her beautiful baby Chloe. Luckily they have a beautiful living room with huge windows on one side that produced beautiful window light. Their colored walls also made a great contrasting background. Chloe was fascinated with the lens, so her intense interest was easy to capture. Post processing in Lightroom 5.
While on a recent trip to visit family in North Carolina, I had to photograph Lulu, a beautiful Coton De Tulear, one of the family dogs, who belongs to my niece Grace Murphy.
Visited Savannah, and found my way to Wormsloe State Historic Site, on a very changeable day, with intermittent showers and sunny patches. Got there 15 min before closing time, and had the elongating shadows and awesome light. Bracketed 3 files and processed in HDR EFX pro.You may recognize it as the 1.5 mile avenue of 400 (130 year old) live oak trees that Forrest Gump ran under. Worth the $10 admission.
Just got back from a trip to San Francisco to visit my 9 month old Grandson Liam and his parents Genevieve and Troy. Alw
ays a pleasure to visit SF and especially now with a welcoming family present. Also took in the American Psychiatric Association meeting and 50 hrs of CME. The greatest pleasure was visiting with Liam who is a delight, as shown in these images.
